10 Affordable Items That Will Make Your Pregnancy So Much Better
Pregnancy- it’s a beautiful, miraculous gift BUT it is also really hard work. You’re sick, tired, emotional, in pain, anxious… the list goes on. Whether you are pregnant, or know someone that is pregnant, these items are sure to make any mom-to-be a little happier and don’t we all want that? (*cough *cough, pregnancy hormones)
So before I’m too far away from my pregnancy, lest I forget, here are my must-haves! I used most of these on a daily basis and they were truly life-changing. When you are growing a human, life is full of “can’t-haves” so what’s wrong with a few “must-haves”? I fully believe that investing in a few of these things is money well spent if it makes your nine (or is it 10?) months a little more…..pleasant.
1. Amazon Prime and Walmart online shopping– shop less, nap more!
First things first, online shopping is your best friend when you are pregnant or a new mother. When you are tired, sore, busy, or sick the LAST thing you want to do is go shopping. You may literally have nightmares about having to grocery shop while you are morning sick.
My two favorite online shopping platforms are Amazon Prime (ships right to you in 2 days) or Walmart Online Shopping (they gather your groceries and you just have to go pick it up). This will save you plenty of time and energy and even money if you have a tendency to always buy more than you had on your shopping list because you get distracted (example “Well I didn’t need this blanket but it’s so soft and on sale so….” GUILTY 👋🏼)
I’m SUCH a believer in online shopping that all of these can be quickly ordered on Amazon with the links I’ve provided (disclaimer: some of these contain affiliate links). Also, if you want $10 off of your first Walmart Online order, go HERE.
2. Bio Oil– to prevent stretch marks.
Whether you are trying to prevent stretch marks or heal ones you already have, do yourself a favor and invest $11 in this liquid gold! When I found out I was pregnant I researched how to prevent stretch marks and found Bio Oil. I decided to try it out because it’s natural, inexpensive and people seemed to swear by it.
I applied it all over my stomach, butt, and legs every morning and night for 9 months and guess what?! I only got 2 stretch marks. TWO!! (And I gave birth to an 8 lb 5 oz baby so I was HUGE.) Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that I needed to give my chest the same treatment so once my milk came in I got stretch marks all over. That’s when I realized how well this stuff worked for me! I couldn’t believe what a difference it made and I know my skin’s fate would have been much worse without it.
Another great thing about Bio Oil is that it works for prevention and healing so now I’m using it to help heal my stretch marks post-pregnancy and they are already starting to heal after just two months.
3. Maternity Belt -for the aches and pain.
This one may seem like a no-brainer but I am always shocked when I have an expecting friend that says they haven’t heard of them/ don’t have one. I would not have survived without this. I repeat. I would have failed to make it through pregnancy without my maternity belt!
I bought this one on Amazon for $25 and it saved me, my back, and my sanity (and probably the sanity of my husband as well). You’re carrying a bowling ball around for goodness sake and a little bit of support in that area goes a LONG way.
4. Bra Extenders– take care of your “girls”.
In those first few months of pregnancy, your belly won’t grow much but your boobs sure will! I bought this set of bra extenders.
(I got 6 for only $7!) and they gave me just enough wiggle room so that I didn’t have to go out and spend a fortune on a new bra collection.
These are also great during those last few months when your cup size may stay the same but your rib cage expands to make room for baby. You will want these to keep your bra from feeling like your pant’s waistline after Thanksgiving dinner.
Pro tip: Use wire benders to fasten these to your bra so they never fall off and you still only have to worry about doing one set of clasps. That’s why I loved how many I got- I never had to move these from bra to bra.
If your bra has 3 clasps you can find those on Amazon as well 🙂
5. Lavender Epsom Salt– Two 3lb bags for $17
During my last trimester I told my husband about my various aches and pains approximately 100 times a day. I could hardly make it through the day without soaking in a warm bath with lavender epsom salt. This stuff really took my baths to the next level because epsom salt is SO good for sore muscles and joints. The lavender was great for relaxing and helped me sleep at night
These might look ridiculous, but they are life savers! Pregnancy hormones do crazy things to your body and extra body hair is actually a really common side effect. If you start to notice strange new hairs, these are great for removing them without causing the hair to come back thicker or darker.
7. Activity Tracker Fitbit or Apple Watch– Healthy, fit pregnancies are important.
Committing to stay fit and active while I was pregnant made a huge positive difference in my pregnancy and recovery. Activity trackers played a key role in keeping me in shape because trying to reach at least 10,000 steps a day gave me just enough motivation to push myself every day.
Some days I would look at my Fitbit and see that I had only reached half of my goal and so I would get up and get walking. The day I went in to be induced, I did a good 3+ miles of walking and honestly felt pretty good! Now 2 months postpartum I’m back to my normal pre-pregnancy exercise routine!
If you are looking for a good activity tracker-I suggest either Fitbit or Apple Watch. I really love how the Fitbit tracking looked on my app (see below) and how much information it gave me. Fitbit is also smaller and cheaper than the Apple Watch and the battery lasts longer.
The Apple Watch is pricier but it’s so more convenient for multi tasking and keeping your hands phone-free. It also seemed to be more accurate with the heart rate monitor and when tracking calories-burned. I also love that it had pre-programmed exercises so that it could be really accurate.
8. Pregnancy Pillow– anything for a good night’s sleep!
The third trimester is a funny thing because you are absolutely exhausted and yet it is still SO hard to sleep. It can be tricky to keep pressure off of your hips and back while supporting your growing bump, but this pregnancy pillow does just that!
Truthfully, I never used a pregnancy pillow because mine only worked on one side and I needed to switch sides often throughout the night. Rolling over when you are 8 months pregnant is hard enough- so it was a pain to have to move and readjust a huge pillow too.
I ended up coming up with my own system with pillows (I used at least 4 😂) but this two-sided pillow would have been so much easier and a lot more comfortable! I’ve had numerous friends suggest a pillow like this and this specific pillow has really good reviews.
9. Eyelash Extensions and Microblading- treat yo’self!
I kind of feel like the “pregnancy glow” is a myth. Your body is constantly changing, you’re gaining weight, sleep deprived, nauseous, and crazy hormonal. During my first trimester I was too sick to shower most days, let alone get ready. Make up? Forget it!! That’s when I was SO grateful for eyelash extensions and my microblading. It gave me a reason to feel pretty even when I hadn’t washed my hair in a week and had no makeup on.
If you or a loved one are struggling feeling comfortable in your ever-growing skin, this would be such a thoughtful gift. It’s worth every penny! You really can’t put a price on feeling good about yourself and think of all the time you’ll save if you don’t have to get ready. You can read more about microblading HERE and THIS is my favorite lash/brow girl in Utah.
She is AMAZING.
10. Pregnancy Apps- watch your baby grow!
I highly recommend having a couple pregnancy apps on your phone- the more you have, the more information you get! Ovia Pregnancy Tracker was my favorite and the one I referred to the most but I also really liked the Bump Pregnancy Countdown.
Since this was my first pregnancy, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I loved having these apps on my phone because they gave me great insight into what was going on in my body. I also loved knowing what part of the baby was developing and how big they were.
I think it’s so cute how Ovia shows you what your baby would look like with an interactive 3-D image- it made me feel like I was seeing my baby grow even though I only got a couple ultrasounds of her. Ovia also has a kick counter, contraction timer, daily insights, and a place to look up your symptoms so that you can see if what you are feeling is normal.
I hope you found this guide useful! If you have any other ideas for pregnancy “must-haves” please leave me a comment and tell me about them!
Have a great day!
