Hey readers!! If you are a female wanting to go take the trip of a lifetime but you’re scared to travel alone then this post is for you! If I didn’t just describe you, then maybe you have a friend or family member in this situation. Either way, I hope you find this post helpful!
1. DO YOUR RESEARCH
If you will be traveling alone you should always do the following things first:
1.Check out what other people have said about that place.
2.Look up safe places to stay.
3.Figure out how you will use public transportation
4.Try to learn a few phrases to help you get around.
5. Research some of the safest places to travel and try those places out first.
2. AVOID THE LATE NIGHT DRINKING
I have heard too many horror stories about people going out and getting drunk and then waking up the next day having been raped or robbed. Don’t be one of those stories! I know partying can be fun but go for an early bedtime in your safe hotel room while you are abroad. You will have more energy for traveling and you’ll be much safer!
3. DITCH THE FLASHY ACCESSORIES
You can do without your expensive watch and bedazzled phone cover. Stick with items that won’t draw attention. Even a simple patterned purse can catch the eye of a pickpocketer more than a plain colored one. Don’t wear expensive jewelry because it can make it look like you have a lot of money.
4. BEFRIEND OTHER FEMALE TRAVELERS
Just because you are traveling alone doesn’t mean you always have to be ALONE. There is an extremely friendly and welcoming sisterhood among solo female travelers. If you meet someone in your same shoes don’t be afraid to adventure with them until you move on to your next destination. Making friends will keep you safe and you’ll enjoy the company. It’s a win win! (But caution: Choose your friends wisely! Do I sound like your mother yet? haha)
5. DRESS LIKE A LOCAL AND TRY TO FIT IN
Tourists tend to have “I’m new and don’t know what’s going on” written all over them simply by how they dress. Avoid sending that message to others. Minimize attention and dress modestly. Take style notes from the local women so that you can blend into your surroundings. If you’re traveling to the Middle East, the U.S. State Department recommends single women wear a wedding ring. Do your research and get a feel for what other solo female travelers have packed.
6. ALWAYS CARRY IMPORTANT TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
Never ever ever let your important travel documents out of your site. Hidden travel wallets are perfect for this purpose! Keep your passport, emergency money, credit card, and contact information for the hotel you are staying in on you at all times. This will not only help you FEEL safer but will also help you solve minor travel hiccups and prevent anything from getting stolen from your hotel room.
7.HAVE A PLAN!
You don’t have to have every second of every day all mapped out, but it is good to know your basic travel itinerary before you head out on your adventure. Make sure you have your flight information, hotel address and phone number, and any emergency contact information AND always have access to one or more copies of it. (For example: Save the info in your phone AND print a copy to keep with your important documents.) REMEMBER: Being prepared now helps avoid complications later.
