Old Town San Juan deserves its very own post because it was so charming! When planning the trip, I had put “explore Old Town San Juan” on the “Things to do if we have time” list and boy was that a mistake!! I could have spent an entire week in that lovely little town.
Our cruise port was in Old San Juan so we decided to spend a few hours exploring before we got on the ship. Our first stop was Morro Castle, a 16th century Spanish fort on the tip of Puerto Rico. It was so beautiful and we loved learning so much about the history of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico really is the gateway to the Americas and protecting the territory was vitally important. The fort was even used in WWII when the United States used it as a artillery bunker and to keep watch for German submarines that were ravaging shipping in the Caribbean. (Cool huh?)
After visiting Morro Castle, Rachel and Luke decided that they wanted to visit Fort San Cristóbal which was another fort down the road a ways. Matt and I decided we wanted to see more of the town so we set out on foot and that is when my real crush on Old San Juan began! I probably took a thousand pictures in just a couple of hours because everything we saw was so darn picturesque. I mostly just couldn’t get enough of all of the cute doors and shops. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves 🙂
