McLelland Reunion in Cayucos
Last week, Matt and I were lucky enough to spend an entire week with this awesome crew in Cayucos, California. We don’t get to spend a lot of time with his family because of the distance but when we do, it is always a party!
I was definitely expecting (and packed) for a sunny, relaxing week at the beach but most days the high didn’t get above 70 and it was really foggy! I guess that’s just the rookie Idahoan in me thinking that all California beaches are sunny and warm. Anyone else have this misconception? Just me? Well now I know why Matt says it feels like beach weather whenever it is cloudy and windy outside.
I think the cooler weather made the week even better though because 1. Being hot is miserable and tiring when you are pregnant and 2. The weather made it PERFECT for whale watching which ended up being the highlight of the trip. It just would have been nicer if we had thought to bring thicker jackets! 😄
Humpback Whales were surfacing RIGHT off of the pier and one day we got to watch a mom and her calf (pictured below) swim around and surface for a good 30 minutes. Another day while we were sitting on the beach we saw a whale in the distance jumping all the way out of the water and fin slapping. It was so magical but too far away to get a good picture. Luckily we were blessed with some sunshine a couple of the days so we were still able to do some fun beach activities. We loved playing paddle ball and I even braved the cold (apparently shark infested?) waters to do some boogie boarding which is no easy feat when you are 30 weeks pregnant 😅 It was so fun, though!
(Not sure my in-laws were as thrilled about the sunshine debut haha)Matt and I also got to sneak away one night to do a date in San Luis Obispo. We absolutely loved the cute downtown and had fun walking around to see the shops and ate at a cute outdoor restaurant. Somehow the only picture I have of it is us in front of a nasty gum wall and then a couple pictures of our walk along the beach afterwards.
A few other highlights were the endless supply of snacks and junk food (a pregnant lady’s dream), playing games as a family, a Hamilton sing-along performed by the grandkids, and long morning walks on the beach! As an animal lover I also geeked out over seeing Sea Otters which are definitely the cutest animals alive and Elephant Sea Lions (not cute at all).
All in all the trip was 100% worth the 26 cumulative hours we spent in the car getting to and from although I wouldn’t suggest such a long road trip if you are in your third trimester 🙄
